English Language Development

English Language Development (EL) is a program for students whose primary language is not English and whose English skills are below level 4 which is fluent on the Language Assessment Survey. EL addresses student needs in self-esteem, adjusting to American culture, and in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing Standard American English.

BEGINNING ELD 02297 & 02290

2 periods/day: 1 English credit and 1 elective credit
OPEN TO GRADES: 9-12
Prerequisite: Assessment Test

Through language experience and other natural approach activities, students will experience instructional activities that integrate language and culture. Students will participate in basic conversations, and will generate simple sentences and short paragraphs.

EARLY INTERMEDIATE ELD 02291 & 02289

2 periods/day: 1 English credit and 1 elective credit
OPEN TO GRADES: 9-12
Prerequisite: Assessment Test

The students will acquire skills needed for conversing and writing in English. Students will write a paragraph demonstrating knowledge of standard English grammar, punctuation, and tense. Through a study of literature and the core curriculum, students will increase comprehension skills.
