Attendance Policy
California school law requires that a student attend school regularly and punctually. The only legal absences by the State of California are: (a) illness; (b) quarantine; (c) doctor or dental appointment; (d) funeral in the immediate family (parents, siblings, and grandparents). Days allowed for missing school: (1); out of area (3); out of state (5); (e) juvenile court appointments. Students will be assigned Saturday School for having uncleared absences.
Please contact our attendance office with any questions at lhs-attendance@avhsd.org.
ABSENCES AND EXCUSES
Per Ed Code:
- Parent, Legal Guardian, or Adult student may clear an absence with a written note, phone call, in person, or via email to the attendance office. Absence must be excused in a period of time not to exceed 3 school days after the occurrence of the absence. After the 3-day window, a doctor's note is required to clear an absence.
- If a student is to be checked out from school for a portion of the day the parent/legal guardian/or adult student, must properly check out of school prior to leaving campus through the attendance office. If this procedure is not followed, the students' period absences may be marked as unexcused/truant.
- Students may opt to attend voluntary Saturday school when available, for a minimum of 4 hours to clear an all-day absence that is not truancy or suspension.
TARDIES:
- All students are to be in all of their classes on time. Students who arrive after the bell sound are considered tardy.
- Tardies can only be excused on the day of the tardy, depending on if the reason is excusable or not.
- If a student arrives late to school an unexcused tardy will be issued unless the parent/guardian verifies with a written note that the tardy was due to illness or a verifiable emergency. Car problems, late city bus or waking up late are considered unexcused tardies.
- If a student arrives late to campus due to a tardy school bus, student must stop by the attendance office so that there is documentation of exact arrival time.
- If there is no documentation of time of arrival, tardy will not be excused.
